Handmade wooden Golden Eagle portrait made by T.A.G. Smith.

This portrait was made using the natural colours of different woods with additional pyrography detailing. The Golden Eagle is made from walnut, cherry, sycamore, koto, teak and ebony. It took six weeks to make.

All 108 pieces of wood that make up the portrait were carefully cut by hand on a scroll saw. The pieces were then temporarily glued onto a piece of MDF to hold them all together so the overall shape of the head could be carved. The pieces were then removed from the temporary backer and were individually hand carved and sanded. Additional texture was added using carving chisels and a blowtorch was used to burn in the markings at the top of the head and to make the tip of the beak black. Every piece was then finished with shellac to enhance the natural characteristics of the different woods. When the polish was dry the pieces were fitted together like a jigsaw and glued onto a plywood backer which holds the portrait together.

The portrait is fitted with two heavy duty hangers so it can be hung on a wall.

*** PLEASE NOTE - THE PORTRAIT WEIGHS JUST OVER 6KG, SO IT WILL NEED TO BE HUNG ON A SOLID WALL (BRICK OR BREEZEBLOCK - NOT PLASTERBOARD) ***
